Lift and airfoil geometry demonstration (2025)
Simple demostration of airfoils, lift and angle of attack using strings, straws, a piece of paper, two rulers and a hair dryer. Course: Fluid Mechanics II.
Photoelasticity demonstration (2025)
Demostration of stress concentrations and stress distribution across force application points by means of photoelasticity.
Wind tunnel demonstration
(2025)
Designed and built an accessible wind tunnel for aerodynamics demostrations: lift, drag, flow separation and vorticity. Drag and lift loadcell setup enabled students to graph force vs. angle of attack. Current setup is being improved by undergrad students. Course: Fluid Mechanics II.
Drag coefficient estimation (2025)
Designed and built an accessible guided fall setup for aerodynamics demostrations: drag coefficient and terminal speed determination. Used a wood frame and polystyrene known figures and an open source software (Tracker, Open Physics). Programmed a custom Excel spreadsheet using Macros to perform a curve fit, and find the coefficient. Course: Fluid Mechanics II.
Supersonic flow visualization (2025)
Buit a Schlieren setup using a digital camera, a D113 mm FL450 mm telescope mirror, a modified led and a sharp edge. Co-designed and prototyped de Laval nozzles to better capture shockwaves in compressed air. Course: Fluid Mechanics II.
4-cycle combustion engine model (2022)
Co-designed and prototyped a 4-cycle combustion engine out of acrylic, threaded rod and 3D printer timing belts to showcase its working principle. Currently being used for introductory Mechanical Engineering courses and workshops.
Natural and forced convection visualization (2020)
Buit a Schlieren setup to visualize laminar flow, turbulent flow and natural convection.
4-bar mechanisms simulator (2020)
Designed 4-bar linkages in Autodesk Inventor, using parametrization, a personalized iLogic user interface, and Dynamic Simulation. Ideated as a teaching tool to better understand mechanism dynamics.
3D printing troubleshooting guide (2019-2020)
Prototyped and design a troubleshooting guide, to teach students about frequent FDM failures and their potential solutions.
CubeSat model/puzzle (2018)
Co-designed and built a 3D puzzle to teach about CubeSats, the QUETZAL-1 mission and to inspire future Guatemalan engineers.
